This Saturday, September 11 starting at 4pm, I have the honor of sharing 3 of my original songs with the Women’s Writing Salon at Sierra Mountain Coffee Roasters in Grass Valley, CA. Here is the order of readers and our bios:
1. Catherine Scholz
2. Ann Keeling
3. Christine Irving
4. Jan Fishler
5. Kirsten Casey
6. Ronnie Paul
BIO’S
1. Catherine Scholz is a singer-songwriter and composer born and raised in the Milwaukee area with a degree in Music from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. She moved to northern California in 1999 and she is currently working on a number of original pieces from a variety of genres: folk, folk-rock, and instrumental ambient dance tracks. She is also eagerly anticipating her 2nd child in late October. Her website is: catherinesmusic.com.
2. Ann Keeling is a writer, editor, and personal writing coach who has taught at universities and high schools. Most recently, she taught Creative Writing at Ghidotti Early College High School. Her passion lies in helping students increase their writing mastery and find the brilliance of their unique voice. She has an MFA in Creative Writing from Goddard College and an MFA in Dance from UCLA. She lives in Grass Valley with her husband, son, and a black-and-white dog.
3. Christine Irving is a poet and playwright. She performs frequently in local venues and is the author of a book of poetry, Be a Teller of Tales and a CD, Originals. Her latest endeavor is a chapbook of poetry entitled, The Naked Man. Her books for children, Prickly Predicaments, Prickly Passages and The Mystery of the Black Madonna are available on Kindle. She is currently working on a novel about Mary Magdalene.
4. Jan Fishler recently completed an adoption memoir, Searching for Jane, Finding Myself. Now, she spends much of her time learning everything she can about marketing books and implementing the various techniques and strategies she’s read about. In her free time, Jan walks her golden retriever on the Gracie ditch, kayaks on lower Scott’s Flat Lake, and dreams about having her book included in Oprah’s book club.
5. Kirsten Casey earned her MA in Creative Writing over 18 years ago, and she continues to work on advanced degrees in mothering, stain removal, and chauffeuring. Occasionally she writes a poem. She lives in Nevada City with her lovely husband, three loud children, and neurotic dog. She would rather be here than anywhere else.
6. Some things never change. Ronnie Paul continues to practice yoga diligently, cook incessantly, write memoirs sporadically and salsa dance flamboyantly. Further more, she still hasn’t written her promised cookbook or learned how to text message. Her aspirations include living in a body that never aches or pains and allowing herself to sit and read novels in the afternoon.

ShrimpFest 2009 with the Ginger Ninja’s
What a beautiful night among friends at the South Yuba River on last Saturday, 7.11.09. On a granite slab jutting out over the water, Michael and I mused for the river folks through the Ginger Ninja’s pedal-powered sound system. The acts that followed us included Ruby Turple with Cedar • Bear Dyken with Summer Moon • The Ginger Ninjas • Obo Martin • SHAKE YOUR PEACE! and Fossil Fool. Definitely a night to remember. Thanks, Kipchoge, for inviting us to shrimp with you at the river!

Lyrics to “Butterfly” by Catherine Scholz
Butterfly
Lyrics and music by Catherine Scholz
I am a butterfly
sailing on the wings of night.
This is how I fly.
Up above the city lights,
far beyond the rain.
I caress the sky.
This is how I fly.
I am a butterfly
sailing on the wings of night.
This is how I fly.
There’s no peace like I feel inside,
I’m far beyond the pain.
My love fills up the sky.
This is how I fly.
I am a butterfly
sailing on the wings of night.
This is how I fly.
Through the struggle I fight.
But look how much I’ve gained.
Don’t have to know why.
This is how I fly.
I am a butterfly
sailing on the wings of night.
This is how I fly.

For now, I will do my personal best to describe the music of this emerging singer-songwriter from Grass Valley. Her music is impassioned with fire and humor. It tells the story of a young mother coming to grips with her past and moving into a new future. Campbell envelopes Ani DiFranco’s angry style with her own soft edges.
Jenn Rogar is a mother, a teacher, and even has a law degree, though she doesn’t intend to use it in the traditional manner. Jenn uses it to be part of the human solution for human rights, peace and justice. She is a rabblerouser, a folksinger, and a singer/songwriter in the tradition of Holly Near and Joan Baez, using her music as a tool to educate and incite pacifism and activism and awareness. Her music is also intended to invite sentimentality along the lines of Kate Wolf and Janis Ian. Otherwise her music is funny as more folk songs should be so that we may find humor in this crazy experiment called human life.
In Angela’s words on MySpace: These songs are mostly a take on Laura Nyro for the twenty-first century … with melody informed by classical music and the Great
American Songbook, rhythmic keyboard figurations, trippy background
harmonies, a shade of jazz, and a smidgen of Texas blues.
Catherine says: Angela came to Nevada County from Austin and combines her depth of musical and writing experience into her well-crafted and beautifully-sung songs.
Check out “Like the Fog” on her MySpace page with lyrics like, “I am floating just above you and I know how to love you, oh I do… here in the fog, blown by the wind, the door swings open, I come streamin’ in with dreamin’ eyes…”
For the past five years, singer songwriter Karen Joy Brown has surprised and delighted local fans and media with what the Chico News and Review calls her “deeply soulful voice”. Terre Reynolds of KZFR Face the Music describes her as “having the whole package…..a beautiful voice, can play well, and writes beautiful songs.” But what new listeners invariably attest is that it is almost impossible to hear her sing without being struck by her singular ability to express emotion through her uniquely rich voice. If her mesmerizing vocals deliver poetry that seems to know you, then the guileless folk-funk guitar will make you feel like everything’s gonna be alright. With simple, sincere arrangements of originals and “well-chosen covers” ranging from the Police to Patsy Cline, Brown transforms everyday events into stories that enchant, seduce, and inspire.

Downtown Nevada City Farmer’s Market

The downtown Nevada City Farmer’s Markets were well-attended by locals and tourists alike. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to see familiar faces and meet new folks as well. The markets will continue through the end of October. I hope they resume next year!
Thank you to Reinette Senum of PowerUp-NC and Kathy Hillis of Mountain Pastimes for supporting the musicians at the markets.
More about Reinette Senum from PowerUp-NC.org:
Reinette has had the great fortune of living most of her life in Nevada County since 1971, graduating from Nevada Union High School in 1984. In 1989 Reinette trained with the International South Pole Expedition and continued her pursuit of extreme cold adventures in the early nineties by founding and organizing the American Women’s Trans-Antarctic Expedition. Though Reinette did not participate on the actual expedition, the team of five women successful reached the South Pole in 1993 becoming the first team of women to reach the South Pole on foot.
In preparation for her largest endeavor, Reinette commercial fished in the Alaskan Gulf as well as trained Iditarod sled dogs before embarking on her most grueling adventure; a solo winter crossing of Alaska. It was in 1994 when Reinette became the first woman to cross Alaska alone while filming the endeavor, herself, for National Geographic. Highlights of this trek include cross-country skiing 600 miles down the frozen Yukon River pulling a 160 lb sled in -55F temperature, building a canoe in an Athabascan native village and paddling 900 miles after spring break-up. She completed her 1,500-mile journey in 4 months and 6 days. Reinette has traveled throughout 50 countries, summiting various mountains along the way such as Mt Rainier, Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. McKinley. Other previous pursuits include back packing around the world for 14 months on ten dollars a day, trekking across East Africa alone where she traveled for a month without money and most recently volunteering twice in the Hurricane Katrina area, rebuilding and rescuing abandoned animals.
For the past twenty years Reinette has been a motivational speaker for many schools and groups throughout the west coast. Reinette gave the 2007 commencement speech at the Nevada Union High School and most recently spoke at the Planning and Conservation League’s 2008 Symposium in Sacramento with keynote speaker, Attorney General Jerry Brown.
LOCAL COMMUNITY ACTION-
Feeling overwhelmed two years ago by the thought of global warming, oil depletion and animal extinction Reinette Senum decided she had to take some local action regarding her concerns over these large global issues. Reinette held her first conference May of 2005 on Oil Depletion recruiting international and local oil experts to speak on the matter.
Following this conference Reinette was hoping to hold a monthly think-tank to address these concerns, but following the first think-tank with 40 participants it was decided not to have hold the think-tank monthly, but weekly until the group could figure out what steps needed to be taken. This weekly think-tank continued for 8 consecutive months until the organization APPLE (Alliance for a Post-Petroleum Local Economy) was born. APPLE is dedicated to educating the community on the effects of oil depletion and global warming and the benefits of a strong, local economy.
Since then, with the concerted efforts of these community members, APPLE has successfully launched projects, public forums, assembled workgroups, monthly public meetings (APPLE Town Hall Meetings), events, and an active website, (http://apple-nc.org), a Clean Power Co-op, PowerUp-NC, and Peak Moment television showcasing sustainable solutions.
